"Live for Health" was the topic of Richard Hansen, MD's, lecture after a delicious soup and salad potluck. Forty CHIPpers were reminded of the scientifically proven benefits of a plant-based diet and how and why the use of animal products compromises our health and vitality. Dr. Hansen presented the health risks of drinking milk which includes viruses, cancers, type I diabetes, CJD (Creutz-Jakob Disease) or Mad Cow disease in the bovine form. He encouraged the alumni and guests to remember that our choice to change to a plant-based diet is because we "found a better way." Dr. Hansen is a graduate of the Loma Linda University School of Medicine in California. He has over thirty years experience in general medicine, preventive and lifestyle medicine and surgery. He and his wife, Kay, are the founders of the Emerald Valley Wellness Clinic located in Creswell, Oregon.

July 31 1 PM - 4 PM POTLUCK PICNIC AND CORN ROAST Grants Pass CHIP alumni were treated to a fascinating overview of the life-giving properties of sleep by Marcel Wiggers, MD, a board-certified internal medicine physician, at their July meeting. More than 50 dined in a heart-healthy picnic in the lush green, shaded grounds of the Rancho Regester beside the Applegate River. Doctor Wiggers has also had extensive experience with lifestyle medicine as he was a staff physician at the NEWSTART Lifestyle Center for several years before joining Portland Adventist Medical Center. He explained the importance of getting uninterrupted rest and how the immune and muscular systems are restored during the sleep.
He also cited research that showed the lack of good quality sleep has been shown to trigger a desire for sweets and/or high salt foods, which may be a contributing factor to our society’s obesity epidemic. He demonstrated how going to bed with the last meal already digested means the stomach doesn’t have to continue its work while the mind is trying to sleep.Doctor Wiggers mentioned that in the 1800’s the average amount of sleep per night was 11 hours. Today we are down to 7 hours, adding that our lifestyles today keep us from a good nights rest.
"Thank you so much for organizing another wonderful CHIP Alumni Meeting. The park like setting at Dr. & Mrs. Regester's was beautiful as well as a very relaxed atmosphere. Chuck and I both appreciated the informative lecture Dr. Wiggers presented on sleep. We heard positive feedback from many of those who attended." -Alta Austin
